Cat on a road trip

5 Tips for Driving Cross-Country with Your Cat From Experience

Embarking on a cross-country road trip is an exciting adventure, but when you have a feline companion on board, it can also be a bit daunting. Cats are known for their uneasiness during car rides, and the thought of keeping them comfortable throughout the journey seems impossible. However, fear not! I recently completed a successful road trip across the US with my beloved cat, and I’m thrilled to share my top tips with you.

Tip 1: Create a Safe and Cozy Carrier Space

Before hitting the road, it’s crucial to ensure your cat is ready for the journey. A week or two before the trip, leave your carrier out and open, allowing your cat to explore it at their own pace. Encourage them to sleep in it by placing their favorite treat or toy inside. Line the carrier with a pee pad for added protection in case of accidents. Creating a welcoming space in the carrier will help your cat feel more at ease during the journey ahead.

Tip 2: Prepare Your Cat for the Adventure Ahead

Take your cat on a few practice trips around the neighborhood to get them comfortable with short car rides. During these short practice trips, you can take them along on errands or visit pet-friendly stores to make the experience positive for them. I took my cat to TJMaxx. 🙂

Tip 3: Plan Two Long Breaks

Just like humans, cats need regular breaks during long car rides. Plan for two 45-60 minute breaks each day – one in the morning and another in the afternoon. This will allow your cat to stretch their legs and take a much-needed break from the carrier. During these long breaks, set up your cat’s litter box to allow them to use the bathroom in your car. You can opt for a portable travel litter box that is convenient and space-saving. I used our cat’s litter box from home. I also purchased this travel litter box for when I go to Europe.

Tip 4: Keep Your Cat Hydrated and Nourished

Keeping your cat well-fed and hydrated is essential for their comfort and health during the journey. Pack enough food and water for the trip and offer them during breaks. During the two long breaks, I put out food and water on the ground to encourage him to eat and drink.

“Ensuring that your cat urinates while traveling is of utmost importance,” explains licensed veterinarian Rachel Madenjian. “Failure to do so can lead to a medical emergency, particularly in male cats, within 24 hours.”

Tip 5: Use Expedia to Find Pet-Friendly Hotels

Driving for extended hours can be exhausting, so consider staying at pet-friendly hotels for at least one night during the trip. Not all hotels allow pets, but you can easily find pet-friendly accommodations using the Expedia app, which offers a pet-friendly filter to help you identify suitable options in your area. I didn’t book until the day of so I could be flexible with my plans.

While traveling across the US with a cat might require some extra planning and consideration, the joy of sharing this experience with your feline friend makes it all worthwhile. By using these top tips, you’ll be well-prepared to handle any bumps in the road and create cherished memories together. I was blown away by how well Jax did in the car, and I hope your journey with your furry companion is just as delightful. Happy travels!
